One had to be forced one way or another into confessing, to save their skin or their life. As well as this the scene with Proctor and Abigail in the forest and Abigail talking about Elizabeth Proctor "biting her breast" were not in the book.
In the play, we merely hear about most of the central action from conversations between characters. It is difficult to replicate an outdoors scene in a theatre. John refuses, mainly because of Elizabeth; Abby is distraught but flees town anyway.
