While students develop and hone their literary technique in workshops, the creative writing seminars which explore literary technique as well as history broaden their sense of possibility by exposing them to the various ways, historically, that language has been used to make art.

Students are introduced to a range of technical and imaginative concerns through exercises and discussions, and they eventually submit their own writing for the critical analysis of the class.

Students will be assigned weekly writing exercises emphasizing such aspects of verse composition as the poetic line, the image, rhyme and other sound devices, verse forms, repetition, tone, irony, and others.
Students are additionally expected to write extensive critiques of the work of their peers. Cover sheet included on page 3 of guidelines. Lyric poetry in contemporary practice continues to draw upon and modify its ancient sources, as well as Renaissance, Romantic and Modernist traditions.
